PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT, SAFEGUARDING OUR FUTURE

The natural environment around Mount Elgon is closely connected to the livelihoods, food security and well-being of local communities.  Environmental degradation, soil erosion, changing rainfall patterns and other climate related pressures can threaten agricultural productivity, household incomes and the well-being of vulnerable children.

MEUON aims to integrate environmental conservation into its wider community development work, recognising that sustainable poverty reduction requires communities to protect and responsibly manage the natural resources on which they depend. Our environmental and climate resilience priorities include  :

. Tree planting and community led restoration initiatives.

. Environmental awareness and conservation education

. Soil and water conservation and sustainable land management

. Climate smart agricultural practices and resilient livelihoods.

. Community participation in protecting local ecosystems.

. Linking environmental sustainability with household food security and poverty reduction.
